David Passiak is a former religion scholar turned technology entrepreneur. Disruption Revolution represents the culmination of 20 years of research and professional experience focused on disruption, and is also a follow-up to his first book Red Bull to Buddha: Innovation and the Search for Wisdom, also available by donation as a free download.
David has held leadership positions at prominent tech startups (Heavy, Spongecell, Visible Technologies), served as Senior Director at M80 WPP, where he ran social media for Volkswagen (including launching Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and VW’s first company blog), and is Founder of Social Meditate, an innovation and strategy consultancy.
David earned several degrees in Religious Studies (B.A. Michigan State University, M.A. Arizona State University, M.A. Princeton) before dropping out of his Ph.D. program at Princeton to work in emerging communications and social media strategy. His graduate coursework focused on religions of the Americas, with a particular emphasis on how the adoption of emerging communications technologies tended to coincide with periods of religious, political and cultural/social innovation, from the “Great Awakenings” of the 1700s and 1800s catalyzed by innovations in the printing press, through the Civil Rights and Sixties counterculture movements accelerated by the mass adoption of radio, television, film and music.
Simply put, as people found new ways to share and communicate ideas, they re-imagined conceptions of community and life in general. David quickly realized that web 2.0 technologies would have the same impact as the trends he had been studying with the best scholars in the world, and made a decision to leave the Ivory Tower to be part of the next revolution of innovation and awakening.
A practitioner of insight meditation since 1993, David is particularly interested in how we can maintain a cohesive balance during periods characterized by rapid innovation. David was also a DJ on Princeton University’s award winning radio station, WPRB, ran a rare LP business called Funk NYC, and produced about 80 music events featuring artists like A-Trak, Jacques Renault, Rich Medina, and Metro Area.
